What methods can be used to further tune a 4a-gze motor to get like 180+ hp? Custom ECU? Is there a way of increasing the boost level of the supercharger a bit more?
Most common things I've seen done to the 4AGZ are a new crank pully, a new supercharger pully, 272 duriation cams, aluminum flywheel, highflow exaust, and a new intercooler. From what I under stand that brings it up to 200hp (I believe this only goes for the 2nd gen 4AGZ found in the AE101s wich has 20 more hp than the first gen). I believe further tuning is very possilbe by installing a new stand alone ECU like the PowerFC or one of the current gernation piggybacks combined with some headwork, cam adjustments, and maybe even water injection or ITBs.
the 2nd gen 4agze was in the ae92.... had the larger stock (10psi) pulley setup and 8.9:1 pistons, but was a bigport block and head..... it's rated around 165hp.... (US model is 145)..... the ae101 uses a smallport block/head and has a map system (all bigport 4agze's were afm)
you CAN NOT put itb's on a 4agze..... it's literally not possibl.... at least with the stock sc12.....
getting 200hp is tougher than you'd expect.... the sc12 is still pretty limited up top.... putting a lightened flywheel does NOT increase hp...... besides, a stock e51 flywheel is still lighter than any of the n/a C series flywheels (even though it's much larger). If you were to put some 272's into a 4agze, you'd lose some breathing down low and lose torque..... which is what is so great about the 4agze..... to be quite honest, up top hp in the 4agze just isn't fun and i find myself shifting early....
if you wanted to modify the setup.... .you can go with many different aftermarket setups... i'm currently using a (non tuned yet) megasquirt & edis4 to control mine.... i would suggest a set of mild cams, if you find a smallport 4agze then go with some n/a bigport cams..... change the i/c for a WAIC... that's much more efficient....

Whats the difference with the smallport and bigport? I wasnt aware of this before. Which produces more power? So I'm looking for a JDM 2nd gen gze from an ae92 for 160 hp stock right?
no one jump on my case...but i have heard some of the mr2 guys saying you could get 14 psi out of the sc12...new pullies and surge valve should do it
um, i am an mr2 guy
the nevo pulley gets you close.... to like 12-13 psi.... and so does the HKS pullley..... however, if you start getting that high then you need to block off your ABV (which also is a common mod) and disconnect the vsv that helps the s/c oil....
smallport has slightly milder cams, smaller intake ports (better flowing.... well, there are big debates about this), and an oil drainback on the back of the head to the oil pan....
ae101 4agze running on Megasquirt & edis4.... yes, that's my mr2

your "3rd" and "4th" gens are the same.... they have the same head/block combinations, same intercoolers, same pistons, same pulley setup etc.... only visible difference is the ae92 oil dipstick is yellow and the ae101 is grey.... literally, that's it
some ae92's even came with lsd e58's
