Canada 88 Corolla engine years

hi - I bought an 88 corolla that is running on 3 cylinders. I have been told to replace the engine - an fa4 - my question is, which year corolla models can I take an engine from to do this work in my auto-tech class at school. the car is otherwise in mint condition. please give me some great advice for a new toyota enthusiast!
Thanks!
Garrett

Hi Garret. What engine does your car have? Is it the 4af carburated model?

fa4?? you mean 4AF

you have a couple of choices 4AFE, 4AGE, etc.. but if you don't go for a 4AF you will have to do a lot more work than just putting the new motor in and plugging all the wires back. You'll need the computer, wiring harness, transmission and probably other hardware like fuel lines and fuel pump, since your motor is carburated. All the other motors are fuel injected.

if you go back with the 4af put a webber 32/36 Downdraft carb on it, the slide carb they put on the 4af is the biggest piece of shit ever (some of the older techs at work told me they were nothing but problems)
