Are the gear ratios on the 3spd & 4spd auto trans. the same? The reason I’m asking is because I have a 1988 AE92 sedan with a 3spd (4AF) and my mom has a 1989 AE92 coupe with a 4spd (4AF) and her car accelerates much faster from a stop then my sedan. I’m thinking about replacing my 3spd with a 4spd but I wanted to know if 1st, 2nd, & 3rd on both trans. Is the same?
So the only advantage for the 4spd over the 3spd is on the highway? For everyday city driving they are both the same? If that's the case then i really don't have to swap out the trans. I just need to figure out why my sedan runs a bit sluggish off the line compared to my moms coupe
The 3spd is not slugglish at all.
Check ignition, add fuel injection cleaner, check oil. Most the time a car run like crap is because its dirty inside.
Yes, I believe the ratios must be different on the 4 speed and spaced much closer than the 3 speed. The gearing on the 3 speed must be too tall and stays in the same gear way past the peak power point that causes loss of acceleration at the top. A good test would be to lock the overdrive out (turn off the o/d switch) and use the 1,2 and D on both cars to see how they stack up against each other.

I was always thinking the reason why it doesn't accelerate as fast as my mom’s car is because of the 3spd. So if the ratios are the same between the two than it has to be something else. I've already changed the plugs, air filter, oil, fuel filter and sprayed the carb with carb cleaner. I've also checked the compression on the engine and everything checks out. I do notice I get a CE light once in a while from the carb so I have to look into that. Also I should check the timing to see if it's within spec. I have a wideband O2 on my turbo Tacoma and I’m going to install it on my Corolla to see the A/F ratio. I always get the feeling it's running too rich and that's causing the car to run sluggish.
It's good to know it's not the trans because I would hate to go through the hassle of swapping trans to find out it still runs the same.
I had the 3spd in my Corolla. I don't have problem taking off. Acturally its faster cause it doesn't need to down shift twice when you floor it when it moving.
It runs great when cruising on the fwy. I actually like the 3spd because it would just keep revving. It's just the start that bothers me. I almost have to floor it to stay with traffic
Nothing has been done to the exhaust and the engine is bone stock. We've had the car in my family for a very long time and come to think of it, it's always driven like this. Since we’ve had it i don't think we've ever messed with the carb or the timing.
If the only difference between the 3spd and 4spd was the 4th (overdrive) gear, and the rest of the gear ratios were the same, the 3spd would be revving like crazy on the highway.
