socket problem?

Hi all,
have a 95 corolla and was trying to replace a bulb. (the one that lights the gear shift positions). Despite new bulbs, no light! Could this be a problem with the socket holder?
Hate to spend 26$ (cost of socket holder) and realize that the problem is elsewhere.
Any ideas?
Thanks

check the wires leading up to the holder to see if they have power

You would need to determine if you have voltage to the socket. Also make sure the wires protruding from the bulbs bottom and the socket contacts are matched up and touching.

Do you have a test light or voltmeter ?
