Hatchback, Definitely. A clean and well kept AE86 hatchback still looks contemporary. The coupe taillights are bland and look to dated. Just my 2.3456 cents.

Pick the one with the least amount of rust. No major difference b/w the two. Stock for stock the coupe is slightly more rigid and 40 lbs lighter, however, the liftback can carry more.
^^^He means the hatchback has more cargo room and the body is stiffer and can handle more twisting and such....

Take a look at the N2 ae86s. they are all crazy looking, coupe or hatch. The SS works coupe looks just as bad ass as the kms hatch....
thats my 2 centz
N2. A all Japan AE86 series from back in the day. Its still going on now but its just mainly for fun rather than hardcore cometition. Obviously you didn't watch Keiichi Tsyuchia's retirement video by bestmotoring. I suggest you do. The N2 AE86s are probably the fastest corrolas in the world. (on the track) They have laptimes that come very close or mach some of the fastest turbo cars, on a tighter track of coarse. eg: Tsukuba circuit. If you go on club4ag you can find the engine specs of the TRD N2 ae86.
