Difference between 4ac and 4alc?

Can anyone tell me the difference between the 4ac and the 4alc? My Haynes manual does not mention the 4alc. I need to replace the engine in my 86 corolla (4 door sedan with 3 speed automatic.) I believe my engine is the 4ac. I would like to replace it with the 4alc.

4alc and 4ac to transmission

So would the 4alc and the 4ac mate with the automatic transmission without any difference? Would the 4alc mount in the engine compartment without any modifications?

L in 4A-LC stands for lean-burning and C stands for emission control.

There are very minor differences between the two engines. 4A-LC is a little more fuel-efficient (a good thing for these gas-miser cars of mid 1980s) than 4A-C and it's far more common (~ 99%), as it's the engine found in the FWD sedans and five-door liftbacks. 4A-C is only found in some RWD coupes (the low-end models without the powerful 4A-GEC engine). Here are the specs on the carburetors for the two engines:

Engine type: 4A-LC

Carburetor no.: 16120 (1984 Federal and California emissions, 1985 California-only emissions), 16030 (1985 Federal emissions [more complicated emissions, more emission-control systems provided than California-only emissions]), 16210 (1986 - 1987 Federal and California emissions)

Primary main jet (mm): 1.03
Secondary main jet: 1.62
Power jet: 0.40

--------------------------------

Engine type: 4A-C

Carburetor no.: 16160 (1984 - 1985 Federal and California emissions), 16220 (1986 - 1987 Federal and California emissions)

Primary main jet (mm): 1.03
Secondary main jet: 1.59
Power jet: 0.44
