Unhappy Difference Between A Cold Air Induction System And A Short Ram Air Induction System ?

What is the DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COLD AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM AND A SHORT RAM AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM ?, i was about to purchase one online at pepboys or summit whatever ,and they offer both types. same maker ,same looks only that the short ram air is cheaper than the cold air intake, they said they both offered the same features, only that one was closer to the engine than the other one.
i want to know is there any difference in sound ,hp gain, or fuel efficiency between both of them ?? i would also like to know which brand is better, injen,K&N, or AEM or another ones you know about ? And where can i buy them online at a great price ????????

from what little i know, do a search
a short ram is just a cone filter with a little piping
a CAI goes down to where it can get cold air, usually near the fender
cold air is better for the combustion in the engine, usually adds anywhere from 1-5hp and a nice sound, more importantly it usually adds a couple MPG

a short (or "ram") air is a cone filter which replaces your stock air box at the same location its at right now. With the shorter piping you will see most of the gains in the mid-RPM range (for low-end power your stock air box is the best).

A cold air intake is the same cone filter, but its re-routed out of the engine bay usually down by the wheelwell to get air from a colder location. With a CAI you will see most of your gains in the higher RPM range because of the longer piping.

Cold air is more dense which allows more air in the combustion chamber at one time, resulting in more horsepower. The rule is: for every 10 degrees colder the intake air is, you will gain 1% of your current horsepower.

The horsepower difference between the two are about 2-3hp... maybe (CAI has more HP), but the downfall to a CAI is the added risk of Hydrolock. When the filter is so low to the ground it has the possibility to absorb water... when the fitler is totally covered in water, the engine cant recieve air and *boom*. Its pretty rare, but if you live in a rainy area the possibility it there.
