Starter noise while engine is running
Hey All,
I recently pulled the automatic transmission out of a 88 corolla to fix a part on it. When I was putting it back in, I didn't properly seat the torque convertor on the transmission like a idiot and I went ahead and bolted it on. When I installed everything and tried to start the engine, it didn't crank since the flywheel was being pressed against the engine. When I realized that was the problem I took out the tranny and properly seated the convertor. It also looked like the flywheel was bent a lil so I took a prybar and bent it back to the best of my ability. After putting everything back in, I started the engine, it swung but as soon as it started, it made this loud screeching noise. I loosened the starting motor but didn't disconnect it and when I started the engine, the noise wasn't as bad and almost went away. When I pulled the starter screw to bring it closer to the flywheel, the noise went back as loud like before. I looked at the flywheel through the area where you bolt it to the covertor at the bottom while the engine was running and it didn't appear to be wobbling or anything. I decided to put on some washers on the starter to see if seperating it from the flywheel would help. Now the noise is small but sometimes the starter just comes on but no engine swinging. Other times it starts. Does the starter gear extend to engage against the flywheel when you are starting the car and then receed once the car starts? Or is it always in contact with the flywheel? I don't know if its the flywheel that's bad or if it is the starter, cause I did get a spark or two from the starter when it couldn't swing the engine because of the improperly seated convertor. Help me out!! Thanks
