7afe and 4afe

maybe this is a repost but i wasn't very specific before. how can i tell by inspection, the difference between these 2 engines? i already know one is 1.6 and the other is 1.8. i want to know how can a person be able to tell the difference upon close inspection of the engine itself.

Normally there's a tag that says what it is under the hood, but I can't think right now of the external differences between the two engines...

Do you know what the different external heights are? Could you take a tape measure and figure it out that way?

They also have different valve covers. If you show us a picture we should be able to tell you which is which.

only between an early 4afe and late 7afe.... if you were to look at a 95 4afe and 95 7afe the valve covers should be the same -- the heads are the same... earlier 4afe's used 3 bolts to hold the valve cover down, later i believe they switched to 4

you probably could.... but I personally don't know....if the oil pan was off you should be able to figure out by the crank as well, as it will have a longer stroke than a 4a block
