Does anyone have a good link to which Toyota engines are interference or not? I know that Gates had a list once, however, I can't find it anywhere. Thank you very much.
This is a rule of thumb i have heard but I don't know the validity of it. If a toyota engine has a timing belt it is non-interference, if it has a timing chain it is interference. I don't know if that is always the case though, because I think the 1ZZ-FE in the 2003-04 corollas had a belt and the 05s have a chain. Maybe they changed from non interference to interference?

I wanted to share with you what I found for those who want to know if your car has an interference engine or not. I searched the Internet and found this web-site that has listings for many cars which will tell you if your engine is and "Interference Engine" or not. Here is that link: http://autorepair.about.com/cs/doity...ference+engine If this listing shows that you do have an "Interference Engine", I would then confirm that information with your local dealer. This listing did tell me that my 1.6L DOHC 4A-F engine from my 89 Toyota Corolla was indeed an "Interference Engine". So, I will be checking with my local dealer to confirm this information. Good Luck!
Generally its like this Chained engines are intereference and belted ones are non-interference, atleast if its stock. If you go lowering the head, etc, then that wouldnt be true
the 4af and 4afe are non interference...... so are the 4ag's for that matter..... doubt my smallport will be with .010" shaved & bigport cams when the aw11 is daily driveable again & i can rip the ae92 apart (then add the itb's as well )

guys, I also have a 1.6L DOHC 4A-F engine from my 89 Toyota Corolla, and it is confusing basing on the responses on this thread to know the reals score if it is an interference or a non intereference engine. I've been searching the net too but can not find a confirmation.
Neatride2, you've said you'll check on your local dealer, please let me know the result on your 4AF.
echo1, I called my local dealer. The manager took my message and was suppose to return my call with an answer to my question. I'm still waiting for his call. I will give him another call tomorrow. Everytime I call these guys for support, I get the feeling that these dealers rather not give out that information, or any information for that matter. And depending on who you talk to, and the way that person feels at that moment, you won't get an answer. I think it's a real shame. I'll get back to you on this, Tommy.
Does anyone know which Camry's have non-interference engines? What year, size engine, (preferrably a 4 cyl) and what group type engine? Thanks for your support, Tommy.
Tommy thanks. You know I've been reading a lot on these interference and non-interference engine but it seems I cannot get a straight answer specially on my 4AF engine. Most of the materials I've read are contradictory to each other. I'm really confused. Thanks and I'll be waiting for your local dealers response.
