Idling in NZ

I have two problems, minor I hope. Have just acquired a Toyota Corolla 1985. It had an oil leak from the gasket (original one by the look of it!)

Replaced gasket sealant, thought I'd done it perfectly, it still leaks. What could I do now and does an oil leak matter? (apart from the hassle of topping up). Don't want to go to all that bother of draining the sump again. :-( And why doesn't someone design engines that are EASY to work with?

Secondly, it has an idling problem - it won't idle! When I turn the idling screw to fully shut, how many turns do I need to make for a balance mix?

Any help appreciated

Cheers from sunny New Zealand
