The Secret to Passing smog tests in older Corollas

This is my 1st post on this forum, so hello, everybody!

I just wanted to share how I got my 1986 Corolla to pass a smog test easily the last time around, after having to pay extra $$ in
past years for new filter/valve, whatever (usually about $50-$80 extra,
in addition to the test fee).

Last time around, I decided to try an experiment.

I burned nothing but 91-Octane high-test gas (I used Chevron in this case), for about 3 weeks prior to the test, and had the 91 octane gas in the tank at the time of the test.

This time, I passed the 1st time thru with no problems or extra expense.

I believe the 91 octane gas made the difference.
I went to the same test station I'd used in past years, and got a better result than I had in the previous 8 years!

Note: I live in California & have to take the test every 2 years.

I would encourage anyone with an older Corolla who has to take a smog test to try using 91-octane for several weeks leading up to the test.

I think it helped my older Corolla pass so easily.

drive for a good 15 minutes before testing to make sure your catalytic converter is warmed up also. fuel system cleaner helps a bit too.

The only way higher octane fuel will help with smog, is if your engine is slightly detonating. Typically, if the engine is running good and the CAT is in decently good shape, most cars will pass tailpipe. Can't say the same for visuals... but yeah. That's probably what was happening to your car.
