AE92 Removing rear seats?

How do I remove the rear seats in my AE92 sedan? Try as I might, I just can't get them out. I've tried pulling/pushing/kicking on that black clip (pic 2) but can't get it to budge.. I also can't figure out how I'm supposed to get the round plastic screwless bolt (pic 3) off without cracking the bolt or ripping the fabric...

Also, is it legal to drive without rear seats in California? 'cause everything seems to be illegal in Cali...

I'm sure it just fits in snugly. Try pulling/pushing on the two clips and pulling the seat upwards. That way it releases it out of the tight locking mechanism of the seat. Happens with most cars.

At the front vinyl covered section, push straight back at the left and right seating area and lift up. The old type was similar to --- 0 --- type of release. With a bar going down in between molded metal clips.

The plastic buttons need care or they will crack. Might be able to get them at Auto-Zone in black.

If you pull hard enough on that plastic covered handle in pic 2 the seats will come loose. Try using a small pry bar to remove the plastic retainers in pic 3. If nessessary use a pry bar on one side and a screw driver on the other, they will come out of the hole allowing you to get underneath the fabric.

I have an AE92 Gt-S. To take out my seats I just pulled the tab realy hard and my friend lefted the seat out starting from the front to back.
As for having no back seats; in VA and VA Beach, you can have no back seat and front passenger seat.

On the AE92 hatches, there's a tab in the centre of the rear seat where your loose pocket change would fall. Its in the gap between the bottom section and the backs, and then folds forward to give access to two hinges which can be unbolted.

Under the seat is a good place to hide any extra audio wiring...

Yep, just pull hard on that handle while lifting up on the seat. It should pop right out. I did this just yesterday. Regards, Aaron

Okay, I managed to lift up the seats and also remove the plastic tabs. The seats don't seem very heavy though.. seems like just a cushion resting on the metal car frame and a stiffer backrest. Does anyone know how much they weigh? I'm removing them to lighten the car but if they're < 50 pounds then it might not be worth the trouble .

the combination of both the bottom seat and back rest probably weigh about 20 pound at the most. it isn't worth it trust me......it might be better just because you don't have to have people in your back seat anymore. Doesn't that just suck having your knees in the dash!!!!!!!!!!

Every bit counts, imho. If you remove the rear seats, spare and all tools. That should save you some, and since corolla's are already light'ish cars, it can make a difference. Got no spare and no tools in mine atm, and with a lowish tank o' petrol, can feel quite a difference between, say, full tank and a light person in it. But then again, i guess rear seats do come in handy sometimes.

You should also remove the rear doors if you remove the rear seat. They're going to be useless

Seriously, don't bother. You'll wish you had it if something came up. Besides, do the real mods and not cut back on weight. But I understand you might have financial concerns too...so just enjoy it for now. Get a new air filter if it's old and black. Perhaps better spark plugs or upgraded spark plug wires. Where in Cali are you, if I may ask?
