2004 Check Engine Light

I own a Toyota Corrolla Sport and I just made it to 30,500 miles and the check engine light has came on. I am not sure what to do. the car runs fine but I do not want to keep driving if there's something wrong. I am trying to avoid going to the dealer because of the fee's. Do you have any suggestions?

3 years 36,000 miles, they owe you some warr work. Don't back down.

I bought the warranty but they don't cover everything and they might just want me to do service with them because I hit 30,000. The warranty is up to 75,000. Should I take it to them anyway?

The factory warr is 3y/36k bumper to bumper, 5y/60k engine and drive train. The only technical issue may be a diagnostic fee. Make a stink about it, it is still covered by Toyota and they should take care of it for you.

On the other hand I have had bad luck with extended 3rd party warr, not a good choice. I will never buy another one. I will take my chances.

Call the dealer and ask them about it. ask a bunch of questions. I think they owe you a complete repair job on their dime.

check to see if your gas cap is tightened properly. make sure you here it click a few times. toyota uses a pressurized system, if the gas cap is loose it triggers a cel.

The CEL comes and goes on my 98. When it 1st came on I went to Auto Zone and had them pull codes. They said it was either O2 sensor or the CAT. I went to muffler shop, they said CAT check was inconclusive. It was not getting as warm as it should, but not bad enough to cause CEL in his opinion. He would not take my money to replace CAT because he feared it would not cure CEL.

Is the anyway to check O2 sensors (mine has 2)? Continuity? Resistance? Anything? They cost over $150 and I don't want to guess.

Ok let me get this straight...you bought the extended service warranty but refuse to go to the dealer for warranty service because you're afraid you might get charged for something? Have you even read through your warranty brochure to know what's covered/not covered and any deductibles (if any)?

Next time don't buy the warranty then. You're just throwing your money away if you won't go to the dealer when you have a problem - like this.

A Check engine light should never be taken lightly. Take it to dealer and get it checked by Toyota techs who can actually read the failure codes with proper Toyota equipment. Failure to do so may negate your warranty. Comprendez?

Any ideas on checking an O2 sensor? I think this is my problem but don't want to guess (too expensive)

Cool disconnect the Batterry

wait 5 minutes, this will reset your computer. Reconnect battery and see if the light still comes on. If not it was most likely a dust particle passing your o2 sensor or a fouled injector. If the light still comes on try running gumount fuel injection cleaner one shot formula. It is concentrated mix. My mechanic told me to do this and it has worked for me and others on several check engine light situations.......hope this helps
