Post 89 4AF coil info

I was trying to find out why my car died and would not re start unless I advanced the timing. Once started it would run ok until you jumped on the throttle. Thought the TB skipped, but that was not the case. No vacuum leeks or carb problems. There was spark and gas. The igniter and coil were one year old, cap, rotor and wires were all good.

I had the coil resistance checked and it was within the proper ohms. After reading a few threads on ignition coils going bad, but still giving a spark, I went and bought a new one. Long be hold the car started and runs real nice.

The car barely starting when the distributor was advanced threw me off and a few other people.

I will repeat what another member said, These cars need a good hot spark to start and run well.

I will say, even thought you have spark and the coil test is good, does not mean the coil is performing the way it should. Any thing less will not do.

Hope this will help someone with the same head scatcher I was dealing with.

Is your distributor bolts tight, so that it doesnt move around when you drive. Is the vacuumhose from the advance actuator ok, (eg. no cracks etc). I never had any problems with my ignition.

The problem I had all along was the coil. It still put out a spark, just not hot enough. A new coil solved it.

Could have just been a bad primary connection on your old coil and not the coil itself, but I am glad you got it figured out. I had the same problem with my car, and a new coil did the trick for me, too. Regards, Aaron
