Mysterious power loss with cold engine
I have a 2001 Corolla S (my second Corolla - my first was a 1992 which I put 200K+ on it before selling it). Ever since I bought it, it's got a strange intermittent power loss. It only seems to happen when the car has been sitting all day or all night. When I start off, the first couple of times I start from a stand-still, the car will "bog down", having almost no power. The RPMs will drop to 1000 or so, and there is no way to make it rev higher - unless I put in the clutch, rev it up, and try to start off again at 4000 revs or more (which leads to squealing tires).
The dealership is baffled. The problem never happens when I leave the car overnight there, and I can go several days wiithout it happening. The computer doesn't show them anything. A friend who is a Toyota mechanic suggested replacing the mass airflow sensor, but that didn't help.
Any ideas?
