AE92 Transmission Woes! Help!

My 1989 Corolla SR5 just lost 3rd gear. I looked it up and it seems I'm going to need a wad of special service tools to fix it, so I figure I'll just get another (used) transmission.

I was wondering if anyone here knew the parts interchange for this transmission, what year transmissions would fit? Could I get a tranny from a 90 or a 93? Can I use the 4AFE or 4AGE transmission? Can I use it from an MR2 or a Chevy Nova or a Geo Metro?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, TTIA.

I believe you can use the C52 5-speed from a 4AGE, I think you might have to replace the flywheel or something of this sort to make it work. Also the transmission from any 4AFE (88-96) will fit on your car, I'm not sure if the 7AFE transmission is the same as the 4AFE, I'm sure someone will correct me if it is.

i mucked up my tranny when it came time to change the oil in it. the guy at the shop(not dealer) only had castrol semi synthetic and the API was slighty off from the books recomendations.

i had always heard castrol synthic is is bad news for tranny or engine on older vehicles. well like a tard i said go ahead. 3000km later a bearing went and i had to replace the tranny.

$1200cdn for a used tranny and labour.

asides from that the corolla is very good.

Well, I'm about to swap out the tranny around friday (depending on if my RX-7 project finishes)

What fluid do you reccomend? I'm going to most likely use Redline.
