Hey SI-GTS!
I'll do the best I can with your questions.
1) for the 84-87 models, we had the SR5 which had the 4af and the GTS which had the 4age engine. GTS had the better part of everything. Althought both share the same frame: AE86.
2) I like 84-87 GTS better, why? The chassis is stiffer, more robust. It's RWD and the blue top 4ag is a screamer. The car is pefectly balanced. I have both RWD and FWD GTS and I prefere the RWD by a mile.
3) The most common swap is the 4agze (supercharged) from the MR2.
4) If you want to eventually go turbo, the better idea would be the 4agze platform. Or, with time and patience, you could swap in a 3s-gte.
5) mmm...no not really. The engine in there is gutless plus carbed. The suspension is terrible. The one you want is the GTS. Unless that SR5 frame is in mint condition, get it, then swap in all the GTS goodies.
6) No! AE86 is the chassis code. "A" stands for the "A" series engine in the car (4AGE), "E" stands for the Corolla model and 86 is the chassis number. Has nothing to do with the year of the car. another example would be the Supra. Let's take a 94 turbo Supra. Chassis code is JZA80. "JZ" is the engine series (2JZ-GTE), "A" is for the Supra model, and 80 is for the frame number.
7) Parts are really easy to find if you have the right connections. there's a big aftermarket for the car.
Hope this all helps!
