Question about gas milage (2005 Corolla)

i have a 2005 corolla, and i know they are supposed to get about 30 miles to the gallon. my queston is, how many miles do you all with a 2005 corolla get in one tank of gas? i filled up my tank last week and let it run till it was almost empty and i got about 300 miles for the whole tank of gas. for some reason, that seems low to me. how much do you all get in a tank? does 300 miles sound about right? and by the way, its city driving.

The car won't reach it's full potential gas mileage untill it is well broken in. My 2001 didn't start pulling 38-39 mpg on the highway untill I had around 15,000 miles on it.
It sounds like you are getting 28-29 in town. Look for it to be about 33 mpg in town.

300 miles is about what I will get with a full tank on my XRS.

Those fuel consumption specs that the government puts out are crap and only apply to 80 year old grandma's who drive at 50MPH and take 10 minutes to get up to that speed.

I believe that my '03 LE is functionally identical to your '05. With the auto trans. My daily commute is 42 miles per day, R/T, about 15 of which is surface streets.

I've put 3 tanks of gas through it: 32.6 MPG (some highway) 28.sumthin' MPG (wife flooring it to "see what it can do" ) and 32.5 MPG. The MPG gauge on my BMW taught me to keep an easy foot on the thottle and use that cruise control! It's got a better "touch" than any of us! So basically 315 miles per tank. I have yet to do a real all-highway road trip, but I expect that I'd get just shy of the EPA 38.

I just dropped in a K&N air filter this weekend at the 30K mark. I'm chompin' at the bit to disprove that fool that said a K&N hurt his MPG (his foot did!)

Air Intakes "CAN" save you gas mileage if you drive like that old granny that only uses 10% of her throtle pedal and never ever ever floors it, but the second you lay into it, you are loosing gas mileage.... and that includes everytime you try to pass someone or come out of a red light faster than a semi truck, or any kind of throtle what so ever....

I'll have to completely disagree with that statement. All gasoline powered passenger vehicles are put through a specific program on a dyno. All vehicles run the same program. The program is recorded and varified by the EPA. The fuel mileage is accurately measured from these dyno runs. If the numbers are not realistic, they are at least relative.

Does that mean you will achieve these numbers? No. The highway or more agressive program that an XRS has to run may or may not 'hit lift'. I do not know. I would hazard to guess that if it does hit lift, its only in lift for a very small amount of time. Those of you who 'hit lift' liberally will not achieve EPA spec's. Simple as that. Those that drive conservatively will, assuming there is no issues with the car.

I drive conservative and don't have lift since I do not have an XRS. If I did have an XRS, I would imagine that I'd have to use it liberally. My last tank I put ~520 miles on the tank, and filled up with about 13.35 gallons. I usually run it very low. And I have put about 13.8 gallons in the tank when the owner's manual says its a 13.2 gallon tank. I realize I'm obsessed about filling a tank, but I stand there and make sure its absolutely topped ... it takes a bit of time. I also check the oil (even though the car is relatively new and it never drops). Checking the oil is a habit for me, a good one. It became a habit from when I drove an '84 Celica with 290,000+ miles on it, then a '90 Celica with 205,000+ miles on it. Both of which used a little, and the '84 would end up empty if you didn't stay on top of it.

Anyway, I can usually go 475 miles easy on a tank, but that's a well topped off tank.

Range...

Salduchi - For me slightly over 500 miles if I drive conservatively. 475 miles moderately aggressive. But I fill the tank completely (as well as the fuel tank inlet tube ).

05 Corolla SE Auto 8800 miles.

Averages 36 MPG Mostly back roads and Freeway driving. 75 mph on freeways. Its pretty consistent with the main variable being the pump shut off.

So, I get about 400 miles/Tank, looking at my records, I usually fill up at an average of 380 miles. Rarely allow the tank to get too empty.

This is the most consistent auto I have ever owned as far as MPG is concerned. My Corolla does best on Chevron, Shell next.

I am currently fusing Mobil Clean 7500 oil and XG 4967 Fram filter.

2005 Corolla S w/ 3,900 miles

I put about 11 gallons in my tank every refill and get 340 miles out of it. I'm guessing. So that puts me at 31 MPG. I have been hitting up to 4500 RPM's and I think that is what is killing my MPG. I think the break in period of the first 1,000 miles was done pretty well and I don't think the engine has really gottern broken in all that well just yet. I'm waiting for the 10,000 mark.
