trouble resetting the Maint Reqd light on my 05 corolla

the 05 corolla has a Maint Reqd light once you go 4500 miles without a oil change. the manual says in order to reset it, i have to hold down the trip meter while it shows my odometer when the key is turned to the off position, then turn the car on and keep the buttom held for at least 5 seconds and then the odometer should read "000000" and the light will go off and reset. i tried to do this 5 times and i cant get it to reset. this light is constantly on now that i have 5000 miles on my car and i cant get it to go off. any suggestions or maybe something im possibly doing wrong?

Salduchi you are doing it wrong. Read that section of the manual again. I did it on my 2005 and it was easy. You are not supposed to start your car. It has to be on the acc position. Make sure you have your odo set to the odo and not the trip meters. It was very easy.

The easiest way is to cover it with black electrical tape. That way you wont have to reset the damn thing every time.
