how do you find if strut is bad

One mechanic in tireshop told a rear struct of my 98 corolla is bad and also told tires are wearing evevly becuase of bad structs. I took the car to dealer and they found no problem. I took one local mechanic and he said I needed to change wheel bearing and struct(front and rear, estimate $2000). I took the car to other local mechanic, found no problem. I just purchased new tires.

Yesterday, I had oil changed and the mechanic at the garage said my struct is bad.

Well. I don't know who to believe, however, I feel something is wrong when I drive the car. The car is not as comfortable as before. the car has 98,000 miles.

I looked under the car, and I have no idea what to look.

How does mechanics look when they examine structs?, and how would I know if struct is bad?

look around the strut tube for oil wetness or sort of oily mud, jounce the car from corner to corner if it bounces more than once (like big bounce not little bounces) if it bounces big the strut is most likely bad

$2000 for front and rear struts, and wheel bearings??? sounds like someone is trying to rip you off...

hmmm.. if the dealership says there's no problems, I would believe them.. your tires are probably not wearing evenly because you're not keeping an eye on tire pressure.

ya someone is definetly trying to rip you nuts off....I went to a junk yard and replaced the whole read end of my car(struts, springs, swaybars, the rod that goes foward, complete brake assembly, and the frame between the sway bars) for $75. Tell me that isn't a deal. Even if you aren't going to do it yourself, it still shouldn't cost that much.

From the way it sounds either the people that are saying your struts are messed up are trying to rip you off, or the other people that you took it too that said there wasn't anything wrong were probly retarded. I'm guessing since all of them said the same thing, they weren't trying to rip you off, well maybe with the price, but they were telling you the truth when they say that the strut was messed up. just go to a different mechanic and make it sound like you know what your talking about. That is why people get ripped off....because they don't know what they are talking about, let alone what is wrong with their car.

It helps to get to know your car.. I'm with 89TCGTS.. if you don't know what's what and what it does on your car.. you'll get ripped off easily.

Stop going to the Jiffy lube or wherever you went. Find yourself a reliable, independant mech. The one who said your truts are fine should qualify.
Push on top of the wheels on the body and let go, if the car bounces couple of times then you need new ones. How many miles on the car? I doubt given the year you should need anything.

umm actually just because toyota says nothing is wrong doesn't mean everything is fine. First they charged me for a 4 wheel alignment and only did 3. Said he can't adjust 1 that I need to replace a bolt. So I said ok replace the bolt, he says I can't without replacing the arm that it holds (for the rear camber adjustment for the driver side) I said why! he said because the bushing will be siezed. this is right after he said the 2 bolts are brand new and someone stripped one :s. BUt the 2 arms aren't brand new! so I was like you can replace it. He said he had to heat it up and I was like wtf why! just bust it off I am buying a new one to replace it! I figure fuck them next time I willdo the work myself and I am going to go back on them for the alignment. I want the money back since they only did 3/4 of the job and then didn't bother to tell me about the one wheel not being done. THEN when I went back the first time they said it's OK that I have to hold the wheel to the left a little, I was like wtf how bout no! thats not fine!

then there was the local auto pro... Got them to put winter tires on my car. Now the p175 70 r13 x ice tires say max psi of 51 and even then they are a little soft. SO they put 32 in it! like wtf is wrong with them! just assuming like that :@ Was a pain to drive the 5 min to my house

Lol...you guys are so right, We took my buds car to a local shop for a wheel alignment and the guy charged him $69 for it ...When we picked the car up we looked straight at the front tires and one wheel was looking off center(like not straight)..the owner said when you drive the car it straightens itself out and he took it for a test ride and it was perfect....My bud drove it for a few days and it keep pulling to one side...We took it to a reputable (AAA) shop and found that the one side was off by an inch(a lot)..We shoved the report in the owners face and he admitted that his alignment machine was broke and only worked on one side and to fix/replace it would cost thousands...He gave us our money back...Even though we turned him in to the BBB I found out he is still giving bogus alignments...Radd Guy...

maybe that was REALLY expensive labour

I wouldn't have paid if they had told me that they only did 3 wheels but they said everything was done! I won't be taking it to Jackson Toyota in barrie again.
Like it went straight when I let go of the wheel before I hit the curb. Still did after I hit the curb but the wheel was a little off, well alot but meh lol. after toyota touches the alginment it veres to the right and has ALOT of slack when trying to turn left.

Heh, I drive with like 30-35 psi in my winter tires and they also say max psi 51. I'm thinkin you just dont need it with a 14 inch rim or even 13 inch like yours.

Usually higher pressure is when you have low profile tires.

The reason they are rated for 51 is probably because they make them in larger diameters and lower profiles too.

I've always gone by the max that is on the tire. Like I said if I had them lower the bludge at the bottom got so big the car wouldn't turn or stop! which is a bad thing :p
