rattling and vibrating sound

When I start the engine up once in a while I hear a rattling sound as if something is hitting against the hood. I changed the engine oil but it still does it. It started to do the same when I turn off the engine.
Also, while driving at low speeds I'm hearing a vibrating sound as if something is loose like the exhaust pipe and hitting the road. It's not there at high speeds.
Engine sounds fine at idle and while driving.
This is a 2000 Corolla with 50,000 miles on it.

Thanks

Sorry to hear about your problem pabuccu. Maybe you have a loose heat shield. It's kinda hard to help when I can't hear it for myself. I hope this helps my 97 use to rattle sometimes and it was the cat shield that was loose.

its kinda hard to tell what any vibrating sound is just from an explanation, but another possibity is that your cv joints are going out. When on the road(going straight) my corolla's cv joints rattle. That is because the boot is completely gone from it. You could probly ask a mechanic to tell you what it is for no charge.

Get a mechanic's stethoscope and probe around. Best $10 you'll ever buy

That same device helped me trace my alternator going bad, since mine is a loud diesel you can't just isolate one sound by putting your ear close to it. I had to use that steth, and it worked great.

Agreed - heat shields would be first place I start looking for them kinda rattles (also agreed hard to say without actually hearing it)...have had that happen on a couple of former cars - not really bad for the car, per se (as long as it doesn't come flying off at highway speeds) but the "rattle" IS most annoying !!!

I had similar sounds in my 97 Corolla last year, and it turned out to be a cracked manifold and worn off engine mounts. Once I had those replaced, the vibration went away.
