Possible electrical problem?

Hey All,
I recently got this 88 Corolla and I noticed that when I step on the brakes without the headlights on, the interior lights come on (like the instrument cluster,dashboard, on the shifter). Is this normal for the particular model or is there some short with the brake lights and the running lights or something?? Everything seems to work fine with the headlights on though.
