1988 Corolla battery and brake light on?

Intermittently the brake and battery lights are flashing. what could this be? Battery? Alternator?
Voltage regulator? Shows 14volts running at battery and brakes are fine. Its 88 automatic 4dr
149k.

This may not be of much help, but my corolla of the same generation does that if I hit a really big puddle, power steering stops working for a couple of seconds too.

Alternator.

Funny, my mechanic just mentioned that yesterday.

Wait, before you take my word on it, how long does the battery hold that voltage? It could be a spike/intermittent since you mentioned "flashing" battery & brake lights.

I had a similar problem and I kept ignoring it thinking it was some other problem. One day the car just died and I had it towed to the mechanics. The alternator had busted. So dont waste time. Change ur alternator.

Hope this helps.

Yep.. alternator is dead.. happened to me already too. Get it replaced while you can still drive the car.

befor you go changing any thing, check to make sure your belt is tight and in good condition. If all's well there, sounds like the alternators on the way out. As for the brake light, make sure your fluid is up.

Sorry to revive an old thread. But my GF's 1991 corolla coupe just got the same symptom of having the brake battery light come on permanently, and on the way home today, the car just died. Luckily we had a spare battery to make home off its power. Changing the alternator tomorrow and hope everything goes well. Is the voltage regulator built into the alternator on this car?

i have these lights stay on constantly for the first time today, does anyone know if the 92 automatic alternator will fit on a 88 corolla 5spd? if so i can swap it out of my parts car and would save a nice wad of cash
