E-brake doesnt work, lights always on, how much would it be to fix, or is it easy enough to do myself?

First things first, there is an electrical switch mounted to your e-brake handle that turns the light on and off. Check and see if the switch is malfunctioning, you may have to remove your console. Make sure the wires are connected to the switch. If that doesn't fix the light problem, then check the circuit.

Next make sure your e-brake cable is adjusted correctly, that might help your brakes to hold. If they still don't hold, you will have to do some work on the brakes them selves. Do you have disc, or drum brakes?

The light on doesn't neccessarily mean the switch is busted though.. usually the brake light comes on and stays on when your brake fluid is low.

While we're on the topic of E-brake, can anybody give me a link on how to replace brake shoes? (on rear drums) I have a gut feeling the shoes have no more contact pad left. Thanks

i snapped my ebrake cable about 2 or 3 months ago. I haven't gotten to fixing it yet. My light still works when i pull it up. I don't know what year you have but mines an 89 gts. I've never heard of a brake light coming on because of low fluid, but i'm used to older cars so i probly wouldn't know about new ones.

Dude.. I would check your brake fluid first, this is probably causing the light to come on. If this doesn't work, then take it to a mechanic. Chances are your cables are snapped or the rear brakes are ceased and you probably have a brake fluid leak somewhere.
