2ZZ-GE differences?

Now from what I understand both the current Corolla xRS and Celica GT-S models have the 2ZZ-GE VVTL-i engine. According to Toyota's website there is a 10hp difference between the two cars (the Celica obviously having the higher hp). Now I was just wondering if the difference was all ECU tuning or does the two have minor mechanical differences (compression, intake manifold, throttlebody, cam sizes, etc.)? Reason I ask is because I'm considering getting a Corolla xRS if its in my budget and I just find it odd that two cars with the same engine would have different hp ratings.

Tuning differences. The oveseas version, along with the Lotus Elise, are rated at 190...

Owning an XRS for 6 months, I am very pleased with my purchase and look forward to many years of trouble free of ownership.

Corolla XRS puts out hits peak torque twice at 4400 rpm and 6800 rpm while GT-S gets the peak torque at 6800 rpm only while in lift.

The GT-S is a bit stronger at the top end than the XRS primarily because of lighter weight i,e 2522 vs 2650 lbs (although, both of them put almost the same HP to the wheels. Don't ask how).

XRS feels powerful across the rev range while GT-S has all it's power concentrated above 6200 rpm. So XRS has good power for city driving and then when you push it above 6500 rpm it really goes crazy up to 8400 rpm.

XRS redline starts at 8250 rpm while GT-S starts at 7900 rpm. Although, both of them have the rev limiter at 8400 rpm. Although, 02 and 05 GT-S have the rev limiter set at 7900 rpm. Again, don't ask me why. Toyota does weird things.

GT-S lift kicks in a bit earlier than the Corolla XRS at 6200 rpm while XRS lift kicks in at 6600 rpm. Those are the major differences.

XRS insurance (from personal experience) is no different than my 04 Corolla S while GT-S is a two door sports coupe so insurance is higher.

Compression is the same 11:5:1 in both of them.

Both of them have the same fuel economy and require minimum of Octane 91.

XRS has a few differences such as, it uses different injectors, new generation lift bolts that are very robust and do not need to be replaced. A problem that was pertinent to earlier Celica GT-S (00,01) where lift bolts needed to be replaced after 20k miles or so.

The 06 XRS is due next month. Not sure what changes they will make, but probably it will be the same as the 05.

silver05rollas, that's the best summary I've seen to date!

I agree with you on insurance. When XRS was first launched in May 04...insurance companies didn't know how to handle it...so they quoted "conservative" rates....and I had to fight for every penny reduction. I just renewed...WOW! One hell of a drop. I'm back to Corolla S territory now.

My insurance would have been cheaper on a celica or an mr2 spyder than it is for my xrs.

Don't forget the Matrix XRS has the 2zz also. It's a fast ass wagon although it lacks some in the Torque dept. but that can always change. I can't imagine what it's gonna look like ten years from now when my son has it, OMG. Then my next car will go to my next son after that and the only thing i'll have left is the RV .

Thanks, RollaXRS. Learning subjective theory has it's advantages.

DJ, I think your insurance company needs to be switched. Those people are clearly messed up to rate a 4 door compact sport sedan with a small family car origin higher than 2 sports coupe and a 2 door roadster. That is highly messed up.

It's progressive, they're crazy. But they've been offering me slightly better rates than the competition so far, and they're really easy to work with if you need to make any changes to your policy. So it's all good.
