ae92 auto tranny blew?

I think my ae92 auto tranny died today…

I started up my car as usual but when I shifted into gear (both R and D) it just sat there and made light gurgling sounds for like two seconds and then shifted HARD, like someone just rammed into the car and the brakes felt like it could barely hold it in place. Then, while driving it slipped when upshifting.. it would just disengage the current gear and the engine would sit there revving a little before it engaged the next gear… although my buddy said that autos grind and don’t slip.. but I’m pretty sure it was jus sitting there doing nothing and it isn’t just in my head. In one of those instances, all of the warning lights on my dashboard lit up, including Empty Fuel! I don’t see how transmission problems would cause anything on the dash to light up.

Does it sound like I need a transmission rebuild or something? If so, it’ll cost more to repair the car than it’s worth!

Did you check the trans fluid level? Who knows...you may have just blown a cooler line and lost all of your fluid or something. Regards, Aaron

how many miles are on this transmission? what color is the fluid? It should be bright red, not black or brown. Does the fluid smell burnt?

It definitely sounds like a transmission problem. Since your car is pretty old, there are probably lots of junkyard transmissions around. I wouldn't bother trying to rebuild the one you have. If you can find one with fluid that looks good, it will probably be better than the one you have.

Used transmission $200+
Labor at trans shop $500

True.. getting a used one put in will cost you probably half of what it'll cost you to rebuild your current one.. that's why I'm looking for a decent used transmission, the synchros are gone so I'm not paying to rebuild this one.

My old Fiat used to regularily leak atf, and that's exactly what would happen when it was low on fluid.
If it was dead, it would make horrible noises, more than likely, or get stuck in gear, or shake.
I just had my auto(rebuilt 30K) overheat, and begin leaking fluid, luckily it cooled down and hasn't leaked since. I noticed that the fluid capacity is only 3 quarts! How is that going to transfer enough heat to keep everything from cooking? I just swapped in 2.5 quarts of B&M Trickshift that hopefully will handle the heat better.
Good luck.

i know there are certain combinations of lights on my 2nd gen camry that mean thgins other than their symbols, such as the battery charge and brake lights going on simultaneously meaning a problem with the alternator generating too much voltage (and killing your battery in the process).

that might explain the lights.

I have experienced a cut transmission fluid line while driving, the car began to surge, and eventualy lost all ability to transfer power to the wheels, no matter the gear.

if you are overheating, maybe a $50 transmission fluid cooler (radiator for tranny fluid) is a solution.

does anyone know about synthetic ATF's ability to deal with higher heats compared to organics?

I got a good 5 speed tranny for a 91 gts corolla. And I think all the parts to do the conversion peddles, cables, and a shifter I think it is a quick shifter. I will sell you all these for 200 + shipping. let me know if you want to do it. The tranny does have about 180,000 mi on it.
