86 Corolla FWD Tie Rod - need help

Hi

I just bought an 86 Corolla FWD (I kept getting asked if it is FWD or RWD at all the parts stores). Anyway, I am replacing the passenger side tie rod. I remove the tie rod end from the knuckle.

PROBLEM: I need to remove the tie rod from the rack and pinion. The flat spots are difficult to get a wrench on them, as the exhaust pipe is right under it. It has power steering.

QUESTION: Is there a special tool for this? If not, what do you all recommend? This is the very first import I have owned.

take the exhaust off.. probably the only way you'll be able to get at it.

I figured it out. I needed the inner tie rod tool. A 1 3/16 inch (or 30mm) was needed. I bought one at Carlisle show really cheap ($8 for the tube, $5 for the socket - I bought two). Since the socket was too large, I friend of mine brazed the socket to reduce the size from 1 5/16 to 30mm. After the tool was done (and cool) it took no time at all for the inner tie rod to come off.
