XRS Reverse? Lockout?

I noticed the XRS shifter reverse is next to first gear. That seems inconvenient, is there a lockout to prevent you from accidentally taking off in reverse? How do you bypass it, push down on the shifter?

Volkswagen style... R next to 1 I hate that.

are you asking this question because you're buying an XRS?? because if you owned one you would know by now... unless you've never driven it in Reverse.

It will never happen. Never happened to me. European cars all have reverse gears at the same place. The reverse gate is way too far to the left and you have to use extra force to shift into reverse. Besides, the beeper will warn you right away that you are in reverse.

It takes some effort to push it all the way over into reverse. You can still get it there if you're just not paying attention, but you shouldn't ever have a problem with it.

Actually, it's more of a convenience....why have to row across entire gear box just to shift to reverse and then back to 1st ??? If it poses a problem, perhaps one should seriously rethink their choice of a manual tranny...

Having Reverse and 1st gear next to each other is the natural and safe choice. Could you imagine pulling on to the highway, go looking for 5th and suddenly find REVERSE? You'd leave your gearbox behind you.

And yes...I believe there is a lockout now....no thanks to inexperienced test drivers who blew up early version 2000MY Celica engines when going from 5th to 4th...and finding 2nd gear "accidentally". BOOM!
