i also just checked for vacuum leaks and all the hoses looked fine. when i'm at a stop and i step on the gas to go is when i feel it the most. it sputters and then sometimes it makes a "popping", sound. like it's gasping for air.

Have you checked the isolation on the spark plugs? I had 2 plugs with cracks and the car didn't like that very much. It didn't run an all cylinders and it was terrible to drive.
If you have a crack in the isolation there will be no good ignition. The current will take the easiest way back to the battery, through the crack in the isolation and the engine block.
