basically when i disengauge my car(86 sr5) emergencry brake after being parked for a while, as soon as i move i hear a loud (loud enough that i can hear it) "pop". it kinda sounds like if you pop your neck or something really loud. it only happens when i move after i disengauge the e brake. any of you had a simular experience?

It sounds like the shoes are sticking to the drum or the backing plate, the snap sound is the shoes disengaging. They shouldn't be that loud so you might want to check the adjustment of your rear brakes. And while your at it look at the shoes and drums, if they're old and corroded or have alot of build up in them (or the spring and linkage) I bet that's the problem. Also make sure all the hardware (springs, cables, linkage) are in working order and properly installed.

One other thing to check would be the backing plate, where the shoe bosses contact. The bosses can dig groves into the backing plate, causeing the shoes to stick. This usually makes a popping noise everytime the brakes are released- but hey, stanger things have happened before!!!

Good luck
