Canada Start problem with brand new Corolla

Hi Guys, Just picked up my brand new Corolla CE with manual transmission on April 28. I installed aftermarket alarm system (no starter kill since it has the immobilizer) and power lock system from Future Shop.

Last night when I was trying to start it - all the lights went on but it didn't start. I tried after a few minutes and it's the same thing again. All the lights on front panel confirms that there is proper battery connection, fuel gauge is full and I drove only about 200 kms.

Can anyone tell me why it is not even cranking when I turn the key? I thought there might be a problem with the transponder chip on the key I am using so I tried all three keys that my dealer gave me. No luck... Any advice???

The only thing I can think of is that you are not pressing the clutch all the way to the floor when you turn the ignition.

Clutch should firmly press against the floor. Make sure you do not have a mat or anything preventing the clutch from pressing against the floor.

LOL! I had my Celica towed away once because of that. DOH! Never trust aftermarket floormats.

If that doesn't work, then I'd contact FutureShop. They probably buggered something up.

maybe your new alarm system is draining your battery. If the battery is drained enough, it won't even attempt to start, although there would still be enough power for the lights.

Thanks guys - you guys are GENIUS

I couldn't even believe that it was that simple. I didn't want to ruin my new car so I bought aftermarket heavy-duty floor mats. I didnt' even notice that was blocking the clutch. I was ready to go to the dealer this morning. They would have had a GREAT laugh....

Thanks again guys...

The dealer would have had a laugh and then charged you 2 hours labor to remove the floor mat. Dont feel bad, we had quite a few towed into the shop for that reason. Usually the old mat just gets bunched up under the pedal.

That's what used to routinely happen to my wife with our old '91 Tercel.....bunched up mat, car wouldn't start .... and more than just once . The mats in our new S have solved the problem, with the little hook system they got goin' on there - works like a charm (she's had that problem with every car she's driven 'til now - I dunno WHAT the heck she does with her feet while driving....maybe dancing, or something ....hehheh.

Ok now I don't feel too bad. Misery loves company.

Glad your issue was just mats!
