Hi everyone!! this is cool.. I actually found a Corolla forum in my area!
I purchased an 89 GTS at the beginning of the year, and I love it!! this car was a one owner car, 211k's on it. original paint is fading a bit and rust is just starting to show(it had none when i got it, :x )
Of course I wanna mod this car, so I got a few questions regarding where to get stuff for it and which stuff to get.
Does anyone know any stores in the area (Toronto) that would carry Bomex body kits?? http://www.bomexaero.com/images1/ae92/ad296.jpg (or any other body kits for the GTS) man i want this mofo bad!! hehe.. and since someone scratched my bumper really bad the other day and the paint is getting old.. i thought maybe i go for it.. if i can find it.
I might also go for the 4AGE 20valve 1.6 Liter from the japanese ae92 cars.. I found a place in T.O. that will do it for about $2100+tax, thats engine, transmission and computer.. but if anyone knows other places, let me know.
I'm also looking at replacing the struts, since mine are bouncing too much, man this car is got everything pretty much original on it, LOL! has anyone with a GTS tried KYB struts, or any other struts? I would love some feedback on this, as it's pretty much my next mandatory upgrade, LOL! and also on lowering springs/coilovers if anyone knows of any kits out there.
Feedback on exhaust and stuff like that would be cool too. I tried a Weapon-R cone filter, but the mofo wouldnt fit. Too long, and the fuse box is in the way. I might try making a cold-air style intake, but for now I'm stuck with the round foam filter from ractive, which was small enough to fit. I've heard bad stuff about them though, like the filter eventually falls apart in a few months, and the pieces end up making it into the engine.
So if you own a GTS and know where to get all kinds of goodies and shiznit like that in Toronto and area, please reply or email me at djren69@hotmail.com. I'm not a newbie at this kind of stuff, I'm just new to this car since all my previous cars have been Hondas, and we all know how easy it is to get mods for honda! LOL!! I've owned too many civics, and got sick of them! hehe.. everyone is got one! the GTS is a fairly rare car, and its got looks too. I like that!
well... it corners and handles better than a civic.. even with the condition the struts are in.. I need all 4 by the way! hehehe.. I can't wait to see how it will do with a fresh set of struts (maybe KYB GR2's) and hopefully a lowering kit, hehe..
Speaking of civics, I had an 87 HB lowered with KYB GR2's struts and Suspension Technics 1inch drop at the back and the torsion bars up front about 1.5 inch down. oh man! now that was something! hehe.. awesome for corners! probably not as good as an AE86 would be, but it was nice. too bad i smacked it on the highway during a snow storm, LOL! (that's ok, I'll buy the snow tires another day, it won't snow tomorrow.. LOL!! ) I still have an 86 HB in the garage, 340,000kms on it (by the way the engine is the same one from the smacked up 87) and still runs like new.. well.. who knows by now, after i bought the GTS it hasnt seen any action.. LOL! that reminds me.. I gotta start it and move it around sometime this month.. if its gonna be the winter beater!
I also had an 89 DX and my dad currently has a 90 DX, but i like the old school ones better, 87 and earlier.
This'll sound dumb but, how do you go about fixing rust?? I live in the magical land of no rust!!! Well, ok... it PHOENIX, AZ. but there's still never any rusty cars out here!
about the rust : find all of it and fix it now before you have alot. trust me you dont want to wait...
no point in moding a car that wont last as long as your mods
True, You will find more rust damage as time goes by. I wish i spent more time fixing the body up instead of putting mods on. Check the underbody and behind the side skirts. Anywhere where the bumpers and spoiler meet the body is where rust will form. After that drop in that 20valve and ur good to go.
p.s Sh!t almost forgot check ur FENDERS!!!!
Well just to set the record... The weather in Phoenix may be good for cars but it sucks for people... right now 7:00 a.m. it's already 85 degrees (and thats cool) I've seen it 95 at 3:00 a.m. a couple weeks ago. And during the day it's usually at least 112 on a good day during the summer. one thing though- it's not so good for interior. I've seen in car temps measured @ just under 170!
anyways for body kits, the bomex one is hard to source in toronto, not that i really tried, but i assume it is goign to be quite expensive with a pretty long wait time as well.
I would concentrate on taking a closer look at the mechanicals if you want the most out of your car. From the clutch and brake pads, discs and full hydralic systems, calipers are in decent shape, also, check out the engine for leaking seals and ensure your radiator is up to snuff as well.
The rust is hard to avoid unfortunately, and a body kit would be a good option if you were to have to get the car repainted.
for intake and exhaust stuff, you would most likely have to do a little more than normal drop in and go. There are a few things that would have to come out, like the entire intake box, if you wanted to go with a pod filter.
For exhuast, you would most likely have to get one custom made with your own muffler, as getting one shipped here is quite expensive again.
post some pics soon!

me be 27.. why??
-Rad was changed about a month ago, so were oil cooling lines (they were leaking)
-Original Toyota clutch (Remanufactured i think) along with the plates, etc.. sitting in my room ready to be replaced.
-Soon to replace fuel filter and unfortunately fuel lines (rusted onto ORIGINAL fuel filter.. the previous owner NEVER changed it!!
-Hopefully a new paint job coming soon.
-Intake.. first week on the road, replaced old filter box for a ractive foam filter charger (round one because the cone would not fit). hopefully soon to be a custom done (by me) cold air intake.
-Exhaust.. who knows.. maybe i'll get one custom done. I like the one-piece pop can style (with the silencer centre that can be taken off)
-KYB heavy duty gas struts all around coming very soon, and maybe a 1 to 1.5 inch drop kit(unless i find a good set of coilovers)
-Really considering a 20-valve conversion if i can find a decent price.
Welcome to TN Ren69 I'm glad to have another AE92 owner amongst us..
For suspension I can help you out, but I don't know about a Bombex kit, like Andrew said "They're very hard to find around the Toronto area".
But I would pay more attention to the thre mechanicals and shape of the car right now. After everything is done with, then we start adding cosmetics...
