Canada Coolant issue

It appears I may have a leak in my coolant system and I was wanting some guidance on the issue.

I used my defogger recently and when I moved the temp slider the window began to fog up quickly. At first I thought my visabilty was as result of steam coming from under my hood. I pulled over and lifted the hood but nothing appeared wrong. My windshield had this film on it and the car had a hint of sweetness to it. It reminded me of that fog machine fluid, which I know is comprised of glycol (?). I checked my rad fluid and it was a little over the top of the core.

Do you figure there is a leak in the piping that travels through the firewall to the heater? Anyone else had this problem and can direct me to a resolution. I have moderate mechanical skills and tools.

Many thanks.

This "film" was on the inside of your windshield, if I understand correctly ??? If so, sounds like maybe the heater core is leaking....had that problem many years ago with an old Buick, that's what it was - same symptom....."film" on glass from coolant.. That'd be my (un)educated guess...heh...how old is your car ???

Your heater core is probably leaking.

My car is a 1989 (base model)

Is the heater core easy to replace? Do you usually replace the whole unit or is a part within the core?

Thanks

Most cars require a disassembly of the dash. I'd highly recommend taking that to a shop.
