Australia 7a-fe vibrations

Hi I am getting slowly worsening vibrations especially around 2000 rpm. This only occurs with power applied, with throttle closed the car is smooth. The vibation is worst cold and is not always the same magnitude. Some days it is worse than others. Gearbox is automatic. Gear selected, speed of travel make no diff to vib. It is a boomy vib that sets items buzzing. Can anyone help ? Thanxs

Thanxs. Any good way to test ? I have had three local dealers look at it and checked mounts, injection, etc systems. They say they are ok. One wants to start taking out the gearbox and stripping the car. That sems a bit drastic.

my car had a slight problem. it was my distributor. that can make an engine run really crappy. it can have misfiring issues. but if its more of a vibrating than an engine hesitating it may be the engine/tranny mounts. as far as i know there is no "definite" way to check if its the mounts, its just a matter of using the symptoms to identify if that is what the problem is

dont let him start taking things out, he's just trying to make some $$$ off you.

it could be a tranny or motor mount.

Thanx guys. I will work on them. I assume the gearbox (rear) and engine (front) will be the one to start with, leaving the side mounts to later.

This may sound stupid but,

Check your HT leads.
And not just for the Resistance.

We get a lot of cars in the workshop with similar problems where the lead fire out the side.
Normally only when cold and around the 2k rpm mark as that's where the spark plug needs the most voltage to fire.

Matt

Thanxs Matt - I will check them. I have noticed that the vibration is variable as well as reducing with eng temp increase, some times it is almost non-existant. Strange but as variable as going to the shop it is bad, come out the shop after 15 mins and the car is smooth. Vvibrates again next time I start it. I will try leads today - thanxs to all for the comments.

Oops, back to the drawing board. A few $$ later and new ignition leads made no diff. Was worth a try though.

Recently bought a 1995 with 200k miles. I had the same vibration, smooth at idle, increasing at 2000 rpm and constant all the way thru freeway speeds. Changed the engine mount at the timing belt cover and now the car is smooth as ever!

The way I checked the mount was really easy... Car in neutral or park, parking brake on. From under the hood, raise the throttle/rpm until the car starts to vibrate (or have an assistant in the car). Then with your other hand, pull UP on the engine lifting hook that is on the timing belt side of the engine. If it is a bad engine mount, the vibration will go away ever so slightly. Another way to check is to properly jack up the engine from the bottom and see if the vibration lessens.

Bought the engine mount from masterautoparts.com for like $35.00 US
