Hi all, im new here, and have just got a 1994 5 speed manual corolla hatch, it has the 4a-fe engine, and i think its an AE101 model, if that sounds right, other people have been getting 500-600 kms per tank of fuel, i only get 420, any ideas why ? or what to check, it has been to toyota who said nothing wrong with it, and i drive it easier than the other people too, ut their ones are soo much more economical, anyone had any problems like this ? basically i get 9.5 litres per hundred kms, and they get on average 7 litres per 100 kms that is an average of about 7 cars
tune up, fuel filter, wires, air filter, even the gas you use could influence your mileage.
Also the type of driving and the way you drive could influence too, mostly city or mostly highway or both, or whether you have a heavy foot or you drive like a granny.
I would check for some of the above parts to see if they need replacement, don't expect to get more than what you already get if all you do is city driving, Highway driving I used to get about 500km on my Corolla GTS.. but on the city..
Hi Steve,
What do you mean 420KM per full tank?City drive?I thought it is pretty good.
I had been fighting the high fuel consumption "war" since 1.5 year ago and did all what RENA69 had suggested(change new stock exhaust, rotor, spark wires, engine tuned many many times) and even went for an expensive engine overhaul.Guess what, seems like no effect on the fuel consumption.
Finally I change my rear wheel bearing ,rear shock absorbers, springs and then my AE101 (automatic) can hit at least 600Km on highway(it was 450km on highway).
ok, thats interesting, i have a knocking rear shock absorber, it is a mix of city, highway driving, but i wouldnt expect it to be this uneconomical, would have thought closer to 500-550 kms considering other people doing the same sort of driving get 550-600 kms
Are the other people using a corolla aswell? Have you noticed that a corolla has a small fueltank, so comparing amount of kilometers per tank is VERY subjective. Only proper ways of comparing would be liters per 100km or miles per gallon. Which are two of the most common ways.
My corolla gets horrible mileage... but guess what I dont care, wheres the fun if you're worried all the time
well, the best i ever gotten was 7.5L/100km could be better if my trunk wasn't loaded with stuff since i was on a camping trip. but the 7.5 was hard to come by, since it was all highway, 100km/hr, no air con...
but regularly, city + hwy, i get about 9.5 to 10... so you are normal... I hope.
Steve, your knocking sound might be a bushing on the sway bar. Happened to our '95 Corolla as well. It's like a small "tok" when you accelerate or decelerate, or when you hit bumps. I would also check your tire pressures. You can't judge tire pressure by looking. Get a good dial gauge, not the pen type. Maybe also cleaning your throttle body/intake might help if it's never been cleaned before.
