Lowering springs for AE92, and how it affects rim choice

First off, I can't find lowering springs for my 89 SR5. Where can I get them?

Secondly, if I did a drop of 1.5, can I still run 16" rims?

Obviously you're not looking hard... APEX, Suspension Techniques, B&G, Eibach, and who knows who else I missed, all make springs for our cars. I'm running APEX myself with KYB shocks all around. pretty decent, not so stiff, bot not as soft as OEM. you can get them anywhere really, just look for 88-89 Corolla springs, I believe the SR5, sedan and GTS all use the same spring.

Yes you can run 16's after a 1.5inch drop.. I run 15's and Xenon runs 16's on his SR5 with spacers, we both have APEX springs that give 1.6inch drop, maybe lower after they settle down. I wouldn't go any lower though.. as ride quality, your floor and oilpan will suffer.

Provided the wheels have the correct offset 16's wont be a problem with a 1.5 drop. Should look good

Ok. I saw many sites selling GT-S ones for AE92's, but not listed for the SR5 or sedan, so I wasn't sure if it fit or not!

I thought spacers were for changing backspacing, what does that have to do with lowering?

The springs will fit GTS, SR5 and sedans.. now the struts is a different story, GTS's have replaceable cartridge struts on the front and full struts on the back, the SR5 and Sedans have Full struts on both front and rear.

You will need spacers because anything bigger than 195width tires will hit rub the struts in the rear... nothing to do with lowering.

One more thing I would suggest to you is that you find a junked GTS and start stealing all the front suspension parts, the GTS comes with sway bars on the front, the SR5 doesn't.

Junked GT-S... good one.

I'm lucky to find ANY AE92 in our yards around here

Is there a company that makes sway bars?

Whiteline in australia used to.. other than that.. a junkyard with a GTS will be your best bet.

You picked the wrong car to mess around with if you thought you were gonna be able to get your performance mods from a 7/11 like a Civic.

sigh, figures! I'm sticking with it though, as I really love this car.

There was a whiteline STB on ebay last week... and it had a ton of bidders and it went for quite a lot!

While we're on the subject... are there front/rear strut tower braces for these cars? Also, BTW, would it fit over the silvertop 4age?

Thanks a bunch, I know it's a lot of questions but I am new to the import/FWD/Toyota world!

Fronts come OEM on the GTS, rears... never really seen one, but I bet it can be fabricated. the problem with the rear struts is that they're hidden under the rear console.. so putting a bar there is kinda pointless unless you chop off your rear deck.

Ok, on Whiteline's site, they list 3 different front sway bars, one rear, and one rear strut tower brace.

My questions are:

Which front sway bar do I want?

*R / 24 / C / Replaces OE 24mm tube swaybar = 22.5mm solid / COROLLA AE92 AE93
*R / 24 / D / Adjustable 23-25mm / AE92 AE93 FRONT ADJUSTABLE
*K / 24 / C / TOYOTA COROLLA AE92

Also, do they (and the rear sway bar and the rear STB) fit the SR5, or just the GT-S? I want to make sure before I order!!

Lastly, sounds like I shouldn't bother with the rear STB?

To ship from australia.. oh man.. get ready for some serious shipping charges.. you'd be better off finding a GTS even if it takes you a while.

As to which one to get.. I'm not sure, I'm not too familiar with their products.

Yeah, I've tried to do the reverse - ship from US to Australia, not cheap and in the end made me not want to buy an AEM CAI for mine ( For now ). Whiteline is still quite popular here in Australia.

That and OEM is your only choices.. I would get the OEM from Toyota though.. they're way better quality than the auto parts crap. I've searched for bushing kits but they only sell for the AE86.

Whiteline USED to have a kit.. but I don't think they sell it anymore.
