That's nuts! Check current blue book value, then offer him $4G's cash. I'd pay $6G's for a fully modified one including a 20v 4AG swap!

It's not unheard of to buy a hachi in that kind of shape down in the US for that price. Don't offer him anything until you have a full inspection & major visual of the entire car inside & out. As long as it's mint & does not need any maintenance (yeah right), start by offering $5G's. Remember to check if the timing belt has been changed cuz it's generally due at around 100,000km anyway.

Good luck! BTW, if you're planning on keeping that long, then yes try hard to buy this one cuz you won't be finding too many in that condition.

Compression test

Make sure you have the engine compression and leak down tested. This will, without a doubt determine what condition the engine is in. Even after less than 100k, a 14-16 year old car may have bad rings, valves, seals, etc. If the engine gets a nice near spec compression .. spec is 180psi on an 86 with a 14psi variance between cylinder, then you've got yourself a good car.

Get it on a hoist and check everything. Frame, undercarriage, suspension, brakes, EVERYTHING.

I've realized that it's unrealistic to expect to purchase a 14-16 year old car that you can drive away without any relatively expensive maintanence. No matter how low the km's appear.

To answer your question, I personally wouldn't pay that much for an AE86, unless it was modded properly or in absolute mint shape. I'd likely put the money towards a clean S13 and some suspension mods. But thats me.

When you pay for the compression and leakdown test a good shop will be happy to put it on a hoist to check the frame, underbody, suspension, etc.

You get what you pay for.
