"Incremental" Roll on '99 Corolla

Hi all-
I am new here and this is 1st post. My girlfriend's brother recently totaled my 96 Camry 5spd (one less of a VERY rare breed on the road now ) Anyway, I found a comparable replacement - 99 Corolla 5 spd with 66,000 miles on it. My question is this: I live on a fairly moderate incline and with my old Camry if I left it in 1st gear (facing upward) or R (facing downward) it would stay put no problem without the emergency brake. Well yesterday I forgot to put the E-brake up and got out and noticed the car rolled back an inch than stopped...7 seconds passed and it rolled back another inch or so and this would continue indefinately. What is this all about - I am quite confused having never had this happen before (owned other 5pds from honda, subaru- all held as on hill as well) . The only thing I can think that would contribute is when I release the clutch in 1st it occasionaly hits some deadspots on the flywheel causing it shake (i knew ahead of time that the clutch will soon need to be replaced). Is this something I should be concerned about? Any thoughts?

Apologies for the lengthy post....Kyle

Maybe the clutch might be too worn out, maybe the previous owner wasn't that good at driving standard and wore the clutch out before its time.

But you'd notice during driving.

I don't think thats an actual problem. With the car in gear on a hill (with no e-brake) you are relying on engine compression to hold the car in place. With time air will pass by the piston rings and valves reducing the compression so the gravity will be able to overcome the compression. The car will then move a distance equal to about one engine stroke.

This cycle will continue indefinitely making your car move a small distance every few minutes/seconds.

Probably your first gear ratio is different in this car, that's why you are noticing it.

Never happened to me, my dad seldom uses the handbrake and we've never had our car run away.

that sounds like a reasonable explaination.....perhaps that combined with the fact that the Camry motor was a larger engine, putting up more "resistence" ??? dunno, just a wild haired guess...

and its not really using the compression to keep it in, its using the friction of parts and the resistance of the engine to turn the wrong way.
