Timing?

I took the Hachi out for a good boot today and the timing is way off. The dude who had it previously changed the timing belt but couldn't get it set right. I've never set the timing on a 4AG so I need a bit of schooling here.

what I know (or think I know)
- #1 plug has to be out
- 2 pins on the diagnostic link need to be jumped (which ones tho?)

I'd appriciate a bit of help guys, thanks.

2 pins are e1, and T i believe
you short them together

number one plug has to stay in, no matter what! or else your gonna flood the number one cylinder, and it's not gonna run right at all, even if the timings off

you gotta mark the crank case with some white marker, white out or something visible where the timing numbers are, and then mark the notch on the crank pulley

pull off the cam gear case (where it says 4age) and then mark those notches on the cam gears and the notches on the head.
everythings gotta align up when you get the timing light on it when it's started.

you want the crank pulley notch to align with the 10degree notch on the crank case, while the pins are shorted.

You may have to reinstall.

You should make sure all the marks are lined up, or a timing gun wont help. You may have to reinstall the belt. There are 2 mrks on the end of the cams that must be in line with the marks on the inner guard. Same with the crank, there is a mark on the lower gear that lines with the mark on the inner lower cover. did he leave the belt covers off? If so you can check without too much hassle. I just went through this process so ask if you have Q's.
