hmmm, if you're dealing with a motor with bad or no compression, you're looking at a lot of work. unless you have connections with machine shops or a lot of money to blow, it's better to either find one with a running motor or swap with a running motor in. No compression can be anything from piston rings to seals/gaskets to broken valves. A lot of internal work will require special tools/machinery and some knowledge to use them.

For instance, if it was piston rings, then you'd have to remove the engine from your car (lots of wires and hoses), remove the head from the block pay for your pistons to be taken out, checked, new rings, install those rings, check your block, hone your block, install your pistons, take it home, reinstall head (with new gaskets and such) install motor ... etc etc. And what if there are multiple issues. Your car may sit for 6 months to a years just to turn the key. You're better off with a running motor.

For me, Ii have a daily driver in my civic and can afford this AE86 as my toy. I can also afford to replace the motor if the one in there doesn't work out.

What I'm doing is I'm going to build a backup motor when this car finally runs. If the one in there right now doesn't run then I will swap it out and build up the non-working one from scratch. I have time and money to play around with it but more importantly, I'm in no rush. Just assess your situation and if you can afford to go without a car, then if might be a fun project. Otherwise, just allow for enough funds to buy a running one or a busted one and a running motor. I'm sure there'll be enough other little bits of other work that'll keep you busy but atleast it'll be running and usable. HTH

btw, I bought my car for $600 and have spent almost double that in parts so far.

the only part id pay for in what you said would be the block honing...why do u have to pay for getting your pistons put in? torque wrench and some information is what I would go buy.... Im only 16 lookin to get my first car but only becuz a car would be more of a toy to me.... and the way i wanna go (custom turbo) i think i will be changing or perfecting all those parts anyways... Even when Im done...and i dont think it will ever be "done" it wont be a everyday driver....

Personally speaking, and I hope it helps you hopeful. I'm 18, my brother has an 86 and we've poured hours and blood into getting 3 86's of our own, and friends 86's going.

To be honest, If your only 16, (close enough to me) i'd get a daily driver first. even if its just a 5th gen civic. Something reliable is really good, especially when you gotta drive your butt to work and stuff. It comes in handy when you gotta drive over to toyota, or the junk yards when you need to find parts and stuff.

Having an 86 and no other car you can rely on isn't really..great.
You may be mechanically inclined and have the tools like I do, and the luck of having a mechanically inclined family like nick and I do but, when it comes down to it.. sometimes it's just really depressing working on the 86 and not getting the problems right. Eventually things work out, but just don't think to yourself that things are easy..especially on your wallet.

I don't wanna hamper on your dreams, but a custom turbo at 16yrs old.. I dream of man.. Getting the 86 to work, generally, is hard enough, and costs a lot. People say things break, wear down, need replacing? It's true. very freaking true, as bad as that is.

Atleast you think it won't ever be "done" =D most people think it's a short term project, and atleast you got your "headbolts" torqued to the right setting, unlike some idiots, who's been dropped too many times as a baby.

ek-9 is right, finding a motor that runs is probably your best bet as to the "no-compression" engine fix. It just ain't worth the time and money to replace the blown engine. Just get another one (usually for very cheap too) and then build upon that platform

Another idea would be to get other 86's as parts cars, just find crappy rusted out but mechanically good cars. They work like a CHARM! Trust me =D .. Classic example my brother and i have. "peter, wheres the bolt for the tranny?" "I dunno, Just use another tranny bolt from the parts bin"
it makes life simplier.

Before any modifications were done to the latest 86, I think we spent well into the 4 grand mark, maybe higher, just estimating. And thats without even supra rims!

If you need help on anything, just holla, just make sure you try figure things out yourself first. There's alot of disgust with newbies trying to buy their way through problems, and being lazy with their 86's. You look pretty die hard about restoring cars though.

Good luck with the project.

thanks alot man.... not alot of ppl give newbs credit... actually your the first ever i've read of, thanks...

well custom turbo does sound very very far from where i am now.. no car!... but its what I would like to do with it... Parts car is definetly lookin like the way to go... And the thing about the daily driver is that I dont think I need a daily driver yet... first i cant afford the insurance... and second when i do need one... like when i go to college it will definetly be something like my moms old van or something... till then im just havin fun.

Also, remember that all is not as it seem's. A small relitivly cheap and quick replacement, can turn into a long, expensive, depresing job. These things happen, but like others have said if your diligent it will work out, you just got to hang in for the long haul!

Welcome.....
