I am having a really hard time trying to decide if I should go with a Civic or Corolla. How did you all make the descision to go with the Corolla. I live in Canada where the winters are bad. I also have a 50km one way commute 4 times a week. I also want to use this car for vacations across Canada and the US. I have heard numerous stories about starting problems. Do the civics have any nemises as far as large scale problems.
Thanks,
Nick
This isn't exactly a large scale problem. I bought my 05 Corolla about 4 months ago and I love it. There is not half as much road noise from a Corolla than a Civic. I test drove the Civic and I found there was a ton of road noise, and the engine is much noisier. I find the Corolla is a younger brother to Lexus. I love this car despite the little starting problem.
lol your asking this on a toyota Forum lol coarse everyone going to say go with a corolla.. same goes for a honda forum i am sure... i love my corolla very reliable and fun to drive

**everyone can bad mouth civics all they want but at the end of the day, it's a good car. i can get 510 kms /35 liters of fuel. i think it's very economic car, the only downside, is that all civic haters will hate you!

hondas are generally more loud, like rrinas said. There's a lot more road noise, and the suspension is a lot harsher. Corolla's have a much smoother ride than civics imo. That's why even though every time we buy a car, we check out the honda equivalent and always end up in the toyota (except for my rsx :p )

wht's that in mpg? we still get 40 in our 93 corolla (DX auto). or at least were, now we've got a fuel leak, and we still get 35, lol.
Scangauge gives my 2005 Corolla S 39MPG highway. And that was with my subs, amps, 50lbs of sound deadening and 6 ceiling fans in the back seat and the trunk, as well as my college textbooks.
I have both, and I love them both. I mostly drive the Civic, and my wife drives the Corolla. It is a 2001 though, not the current model. Your choice, you can't go wrong either way.
Choose corolla, its more powerful, more quiet and more safe than a civic.
Ye, the civic consumes less fuel than a corolla, and its handling is a little bit better, but I mean those are the only reasons you may choose a civic.
50km one way commute.. I used to do Oshawa-Mississauga for 6yrs, 75+km one way. 3years I did on a Civic and 3years I did with my Corolla GTS. Either car was great on gas, although the Civic was a little better due to having a 1.3L motor and 65hp as opposed to 1.6L, 120hp 4AGE motor on my Corolla, but regardless they were both great cars.. never let me down.
I guess the choice is really up to you, I myself would buy either car again; I have nothing bad to say about either one.. well maybe that everyone and their grandmas own a Civic.. but then again the same can be said for Corollas.
I've owned both as well.
Bought a 1995 used civic with 80k and i loved it. Until one time i drove it from Toronto to florida, and when i got back the engine was burning some oil. Didn't take the punishment, as i made the trip non-stop. Lasted me 1 year.
Then i bought a 1989 corolla LE with 110K. Drove it to NewBrunswick, Detroit, Ottawa, Quebec, etc. I even race it a few times at the toronto motorsporsts raceway. 220k & 5 years latter, this engine still didn't loose a drop of oil. Had to get rid of it as the rust was embarasing.
Bottom line is, a civic will not be able to take as much punishment as a corolla would without having serious problems.
Thank you all for your quick replys. From all the literature I have had access to, the Corolla CE gets better MPG than a similar Civic. I have heard from Co workers, that once you get above about 110km/h that the civics fuel mileage drops because of the engine being so small
i luv my corolla... i drove many other cars b4 including many hondas, GM, Chrysler, mazda, Ford and nissans... but they all just don't hav the feeling u get from driving a corolla and other toyotas... i drove all these toyotas b4 Camry, Sienna, Avalon, IS300, 4Runner, and echo hb... they all got the same toyota feel that u don't get from other brands...

Check your insurance rates for both vehicles. I wouldn't be surprised if the Corolla comes in several $100 lower than Civic. I have an XRS and pay less than when I had my 95 Civic....10 years ago! Go figure!
Starting problems are few and far between. Like anything on web forums, the noise you hear is all your hear. There's little to be heard from the hundreds of thousands of satisfied Corolla drivers. Besides, Corolla has bigger engine, more power, more features, is newer, quieter, rides better, etc etc etc.
I have owned both (95 Civic and 05 Rolla). Both are good cars and have their strengths and weaknesses. But I was complimented on the 05 seats for comfort.
