Canada 2005 Corolla CE - how to remove front factory speaker

Hey guys, as I was sniffing around different DIY websites - to me it looked like replacing factory speakers is probably one the of easiest upgrades...

So, I wanted to upgrade the front speakers of my 2005 Corolla CE and within 5 minutes I was able to remove the plastic door panel. I was in much shock when I saw the speaker because it was attached to a plastic frame and that frame is attached with 4 dead bolt type of screws with the door panel.

It wasn't possible to use a screwdrive - neither the screw was attached with any small nuts from inside the door panel...

It is very hard to explain unless you saw one of these settings. Then you would know exactly what I'm talking about...

Can anyone give me any tips on how to remove the factory speakers?
Thanks...

You must do the unthinkable....

Seriously, CUT out the paper speaker cone and the plastic supports behind it and mount the new speakers into the outer ring of the stock speaker. It sounds weird but this is the easiest and best way to do it.

to clarify... you dont unscrew the speaker or anything, while its in the door you cut out the cone and put the new one inside it.

Really??? I was about to do that but then thought even though I cut out the paper speaker - how would I be able to to remove the magnetic/metallic bottom?

So, as I understand -- if I cut the factory speaker out - I should be able to remove it. Do I need to cut the plastic cone/speaker frame also?

Hacksaw and saw the basket out of the door. I've seen it done.

Exactly, there are like 3 skinny "spokes" that the magnet is mounted to. Just cut them and mount your new speaker int he old speakers ring. Thats how mine are done too.

you guys sound like the new generation of the Boro Crew

you could just get a factory service or repair manual and figure out how to properly remove them.

...If you do it correctly, do a write up (pics or not) I'll add it to the Corolla FAQ Sticky

I didnt get enough pics for a DIY, but here is a pic of the door with the skin off:

you can kinda see the new speaker being placed into the old ring.

I got a factory service manual and tried to properly remove it and trust me -- it's a pain in the ass. I tried it for about 20 minutes with absolutely no result.

At the end - I followed POLO708's instruction -- just cut out the factory speaker, and then cut out the 5 plastic spokes that were holding the speaker magnet. Then I put my speaker and attached the screws - voila! 5 minutes work with 100% success

Thanks to POLO708 once again

Next project will be to replace the rear speakers... By the way, are the rear speakers similarly crappy like the front speakers also?

You're welcome! Yes the rears are pretty crappy, but for a stock system they are pretty good sounding. They are a bitch to get to though! have fun.

Sign up over at www.9thgencorolla.com also, tons of great info there too.
