Canada Brand new car smell?

I was wondering - why do the cars from dealers always smell alike? Not only my Toyota - I got the same smell in all the new cars (one of my friends has rental car business so I had the pleasure of driving most of the brands)...

At first I thought it is probably the new materials inside new cars that cause this distinctive smell. But as it looks like even 4-5 year old cars smell exactly the same when the dealers sell those...

This might be a lame question to ask but just wondering if anyone knows the mystery behind it...

Its because of the chemicals used to treat the dash and interior trim

Mike Phillips of Meguiars, Irvine, said that the new car smell is carcinogenic...

Funny how other companies market these smells

It is. The smell you are getting is from the chemicals in the plastics that are leaching into the air. So your new car can kill you. These chemicals have been known to cause cancer in mice.

But have you ever seen a mouse driving a car? So I have no idea how they proved this.
