Unhappy Automatic transmission problems

Hi, I have a 99 Corolla automatic tranny. The problem is I have a intermittent shift engagement issues. Shifting into drive will work sometimes, it would engage...stay engaged, drive for X amount of kms and say if i come to a stop light or held up in traffic it would fall out back into neutral when idle. I've noticed when i turned the car off and "let it rest" for say 1-2 mins turn her back on...shift into D...3-4 seconds...and then it goes in, i'm on my way again, however if i have to idle again there it goes. Also when it is in drive it seems kinda of sloppy like it just got out of bed or something...like a stutter. ie when you leave it in drive it will move forward smoothly, now it feels like it jolts or crawls....

Anywho, any help would be appreciated and if you need more details i will try my best. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, wouldn't mind tackling this myself.

Thanks!
Steve

Well i don't know exactly what it is, but i know it spells trouble. My dad's isuzu rodeo had that problem. It would take a couple seconds to shift into drive, then when accelerating, it would stutter, as if the wheels were hopping while burning out, cept the werent. It never fell out of drive though.

Your transmission oil might be low or need replacement. While the engine running, check the level of your transmission oil. The color should be redish pink, and if the color is dark, have your transmission oil flushed. If this doesnt help, there might be a sensor issue.

Dropped the pan this morning, cleaned up the tranny filter and everything else.
Man there was a lot of filings, the car was bought used....i guess the previous owner did a poor job maintaining it. Tripple flushed it and filled with AMS, now it works again. I still get an initial..somewhat rough engagement when shifting into D, any additives that can fix this? ie. lucas oil? Are these cars sensititve to pressure flush?

You should get it flushed because like 20% is stuck in the torque convertor when you turn the car off.
