Distinct 1990's Corolla sound

I was cleaning my car the other day when I heard a familiar sound. Before looking up to see who it was, I knew it was my mom driving our Corolla (1992 DX) because of the sound. After a few minutes, I heard another sound. But when I looked it was an AE101 I think (chassis type after AE92?). They sounded similar.

The thing is I'm inclined to think the AE92 and the next gen Corolla were built similarly, and hence have the same noise. They look so much alike, with very small modifications (from my perspective). The next generations sound differently (or none at all). We had a 1995 Corolla XE (1.3 liter engine, 5 speed manual) but it sounded different too, this was in the Philippines.

I was wondering, did all stock Corollas sound the same? Or is something in need of replacing? I know the alternator is making noises, but two Corollas of different chassis types? On a side note, did the late model US version AE92 and its succeeding generation of Corollas have the same engine (I think they did, but later on changed it to 7AFE)?

I'm curious, I was driving my car with my mom driving hers beside mine. I heard a different sound when she hit the gas and made a left (I was heading straight). I will check on it tomorrow, hopefully it won't get worse as I will be leaving for the Philippines on Saturday. Mechanic's last diagnosis is the alternator making that sound.

Is there a way to silence the stock Corolla sound, by any chance? I am inclined to think that the muffler is not oem anymore, but I could be wrong.
