Question Corolla 95-97 (AE102) What engines and what trannies were used?

Hey
I'm thinking about getting a AE102 for school, after all, reliability and space is what I need now..

I want to ask something, for you AE102 (93,94-97 corollas in US market) owners out there, are all 95 and after Corollas equiped with 1.8L 7Afe, or were they optional? And, for those 1.6L 4afe engines, which 5 speed tranny was used? the C50 or the C52? The C52 has 2 ports for starter, so there's one blank. C52s are also stronger and less likely to fail, ( especailly with alot of miles ). I had bad experience with the C50 transmissions back when I had a early MR2... those 2nd gears... They are.. crunchy.

So, if any Corolla people out there can give me an Idea on the drive train options, that would be great!

Thanks a bunch!

the 7afe engine was optionnal
all LE model was equipped with the 7afe but some DX have it
you can know that by the serial number which start by AE09
if it dosent have that number in it, you better search for another 'rolla
the 7afe is equipped with the c52
hope this might help you bro!

7AFE Corolla with manual C52 is hard to find around here in Canada, maybe it's different where you are. I would definately try to find a 7AFE with stick, it's pretty fast from what I've seen.

If you want super duper gas mileage, get a 1.6, but it will be very very slow! However, my C50 has almost 300,000kms and is beaten on all the time with a 4AGZE pushing 11psi!

Upgrade it.. I'm picking up a C56 from a blacktop 20V for $100, there was like 4 C56s for sale in the forums recently, anywhere from $100-$200 CDN.

not the older ones

the 4afe came in the "ae101".... came with a c50
the 7afe came in the "ae102"..... came with a c52'

however, the final drive ratio on the ae102's are different than the c52's that came in the later mr2's & ae92 gts's.... so not quite the same trannies......

Any info on what tranny's used in 98+ corollas?
and, did they revise the second gear synchro on those C50s used in 94 corollas with 1.6L?
it was really common for C50 to have second gear grind back in 85, 86 MR2s. Or at least, is it still common in Corollas? I thought C52 replaced C50, obviously I made a mistake.

In a way it did.. the C52 was used for more performance oriented cars, while the C50 was used for more economy oriented cars.
