DIY- disabling daytime running lights

http://vamp.darkravers.net/DIYDisablingDRLs.cfm - for a 8th generation Corolla (1998-2002) but should be similar to the 9th generation.

I did this with my 01 and Im loving it. I actually have a light switch that does what I want it to now, its not a useless ornament anymore.

I did this mod, but not to disable the DRL's, but to have control of the headlights and parking lights at night. I live in a military town, and we are supposed to turn off our headlights at night as we approach the guard gate.

Back in the day, the guards would scold most people who didnt turn off their headlights. Today, it doesnt happen, because they now know about automatic lights that people have no control over. For me, in this case, it's just an issue of courtesy.

With my mod, I do not believe in driving during the day without the DRL's. But I do want override controls at night at certain times. When I sit at the drive-thru at night in a long line, I will also override the headlights as to not blind the person in front of me.

same as omar, and also during the days when I park somewhere I dont like the nuissance of having to shut the car off then restart it with the parking brake up just to have the lights off. now the lights do what I want them to do, by using the switch which is made to control them but doesnt. if I want daytime lights all I have to do is turn the switch on but cars are being made so supposedely smart that theyre past that point to being down right aggrevating now.

same with the autolocks, I dont want it locking me in when I want to get out of it and I dont want my own car keeping me out of it when I want to get in the passenger's side either where I have to walk back around to the drivers side and unlock it then walk back around again to get in it. this has happened enough times that I want to change it to where it locks when I tell it to, and otherwise not until then.

Im a big boy and I know when to lock my car and turn my lights on too and I dont need toyota mandating that for me all the time since its been more trouble than it has help. hopefully someone will be able to tell me how to disable that too where I wont have to mess with taking it to the dealer to get it changed.

yes thru the securikey system but its manual says nothing on how to disable it other than to take it to the dealer for them to do that which I'll do as a last resort if I cant find out how myself.

It works this way on my wife's '01 Corolla and my '03 Corolla - Put the brake up one click before starting the engine and you'll find the lights don't come on. I did a minor mod on my car to make the amber sidemarkers come on as my DRLs - I like them a lot more - looks like most of the current year Chevy vehicles - and the bulbs are cheaper to replace when they go bad.

anyway, try it, put the brake all the way down, then pull it up one click.... THEN start the car... DRL's and the twilight sentinel *lights on after dark* will be disabled. Doesn't void the warrenty either.

thats what I was already doing as stated in post #4 but I thought he was saying in post #7 that his dads truck's lights would go off when they were already on, by engaging the parking brake. maybe he meant that as before starting the truck though which would be the same as the corolla. its so good to have that disabled now.

What does the mod consist of? Also, can you use it to make your high beams your DRL's?
