1995 corolla stereo install

hi there,

I tried putting a stereo into a friends car today - 1995 toyota corolla sedan - I have no idea how to remove the trim pieces - the trim piece with the 2 screws only comes off half way - the upper trim piece around the radio and vents only moves 1mm in any direction - I slid in a flat head screwdriver and tried to pry it off - no luck at all - only the dash material around the dash started getting out of shape.

the trim piece feels like it's going to break if I pull any harder on it.

anyone have pics or something I can look at?

the local shops have their manuals sealed and priced above $20 (no returns) :/

There are two clips on the outer side of the screws from memory (been a while since i had that dash in there. You need to pry those clips out from underneath the top trim panel, then the top trim panel is just held on by the a/c knobs, a/c switch (if it has one) and a few clip strips.

So after prying the clips from the bottom panel out from underneath the top panel, you need to remove the a/c knobs and pull the top panel off, from memory, the clips are about half way up on either side and two at the top. The a/c button will come with the panel as it doesnt need to be pushed in too tightly for it to work.

I'm lost on that description

here's a link I found to the dash photo
http://www.brisbaneperformance.com/cars.php?id=303

i took all the knobs off - even the climate control decal strip came off :]

where are those clips? I couldn't see them - the lower trim piece would only come off half and then feel like it was going to snap - so I went upside down to see if there was anything I needed to release - couldn't see a damn thing - and the AC button actually just came out as the whole module without any effort - just kinda slid out :]

I will try and find the clips that are half way up on either side

I just don't want to break anything :|

any suggestions on where to place a prying tool or where to pull from with my hands?

Ok. I just remembered that i have a complete half cut (in pieces) in my workshop so i made a little mini how-to on this:

1. In the picture below you can see a (semi) complete dash, this is backwards, yes but the concept is still the same. You need to remove the knobs as shown and the screws as shown. The a/c switch should be where the other arrow is:

2. Note the position of the clips. You will need to pry these off, pull the bottom panel off (this will need a bit of pursuasion), then unplug the cigi lighter plug as shown:

3. What should be left:

4. Pull the upper panel off, noting the position of the clips. The panel is strongest where these are:

5. The position of the stereo screws:

Hope this helps.

you're AMAZING!

so I take the 2 screws out - which gives me the ability to pull on the upper trim and keep pulling at those places where the clips are.

does the bottom trim piece have to come off, or can I just leave it on and work in the upper dash location?

THANKS A MILLION AUS DOLLARS

It is easier to take the bottom trim off, cause it allows easier access to the top trim, but you can leave it in if you like.

You can transfer those millions into my account if you like too

I'll be slowly increasing pulling strength on the upper trim - I can stick my hand in between enough to get a nice grip - the bottom trim doesn't want to come out either - so I'm wondering if something stupid has been done to the dash to make it so hard to remove.

i am transferring the ONE meeellion AUS dollahs right now...

clink clink clink

I'm sure one of the mods could sticky it as "AE1XX radio install" in the Main Corolla Sticky thread.
