I'm running out of ideas, I just spent all morning working on my car trying to solve my fluctuating hi to very hi idle problem;
1) checked my car for every possible vaccuum leak (again and again)
2) calibrated TPS
3) cleaned TB and AFM, already tried spare AFM
4) disconnected TPS to remove the TPS from the equation (TPS only affects accel enrichment, it is not required to run the car)
5) no more air in the anti-freeze, which looks great, no oil getting into it, it's clean
6) engine oil is spotless
So the only thing left that I can think of is the O2 sensor, anyone have one I can borrow for a test... any single wire Bosch from a 1989 or earlier 4ag or similar should work?

damn neil i am running out of ideas too.........
hmm, sounds like the headgasket is a-ok, and the coolant lines seem fine as well. hmm.
any leak infront of the throttlebody seems to make the idle lower, but anything behind the throttlebody will raise the idle.
have you checked the vacuume hose going to the FPR?
im gonna go check my oil now. :-?

Best way to test for vacume leaks is to use a propane torch. Dont light it, just open it so the propane is comming out, run that around your vacume hoses and if your car's idle jumps, you have a leak. Dont worry it wont blow your engine.

....when I remove the crankcase line and leave the hole open, no change! I am certain that once upon a time when the engine was running good, I removed this and the engine reved up.
I did not check the FPR line today, but I did check it previously, I will re-check, thanks Andrew.
Wunderboy, thanks for the suggestion, I have a torch, if I get desperate I will try this... their are so many vaccuum lines on this engine, I imagine it can still be difiicult to pinpoint...and since disconnecting the crankcase vaccuum line didn't cause the idle to jump, I doubt propane will....but as a last effort it might be worth a shot.
I am guessing that the 02 sensor is in trouble... ever hear of a dirty 02 sensor? On my lapping days, since I don't have a catch can, sometimes large amounts of oil get sucked into the intake, and clouds of blue come puffing out behind me, this causes the engine to seriously bog. I'm thinking that could possibly foul things up.
It looks like a trip back to Garage GTP aka garage Nick Chen-Yin SPL.....i might have a couple of O2 sensors laying around...if you're lucky, i might have the ae92 one.
btw, you have that replacement clutch release bearing and the shims? I'm thinking of swapping trannies....this non existent third is pissing the hell out of me.
on another note...could it also be one of your other sensors (temp sensor, etc.) or even wires off the loom have gone bad? and although unlikely, can an ecu pin out go rotten because of old age?
I've been driving around with the throwout carrier and the single retainer in my glove compartment since two lapping events ago, I just forgot to give it to ya! ...stupid me

Damn! i have that problem too.. engine revs normal sometimes.. then outta nowhere its at 1500rpm idle.. then later it goes down to 500-600.. then it goes back up.. its pissing me off.. I'm gonna be replacing my fuel filter soon.. I'll let you know what happens after.. hopefully that's the problem.. cuz the filter never got changed before, so its probably a bit clogged.
Ckeck your idle screw, temp sensor as ewll as check the lines that go thru the throttle body. I had that problem before, and it was because the lines that go to the TB are plugged, and the idle screw was not adjusted.
